Thanks to the use of Facit's virtual reality
simulation, a frigate landing safety officer's workstation has been successfully redesigned, improving intervisibility in helicopter landings and showing the benefits of using virtual reality technologies before cutting metal.
A virtual prototype was constructed to assist the Defence department in
the redesign of their workstation. A commercial, off the shelf head mounted display was used to let LSOs observe a virtual environment that consisted of the workstation, a sea helicopter, a hanger and the deck of the frigate.
The visual representation of the frigate was matched to
a plywood mockup that physically constrained the LSO's movements to mimic the design of the workstation. The virtual prototype was employed to assess
intervisibilty, which is especially problematic during starboard approaches to the deck by the helicopter.
